Doomsday for the US Dollar: Post Mortem for the World's "Reserve Currency" Dec 18, 2010 - www.globalresearch.ca

Paul Volcker is worried about the future of the dollar and for good reason.

The Fed has initiated a program (Quantitative Easing) that presages an end to Bretton Woods 2 and replaces it with different system altogether.

Naturally, that's made trading partners pretty nervous.

Despite the unfairness of the present system--where export-dependent countries recycle capital to US markets to sustain demand---most nations would rather stick with the "devil they know", then venture into the unknown.

But US allies weren't consulted on the matter.

The Fed unilaterally decided that the only way to fight deflation and high unemployment in the US, was by weakening the dollar and making US exports more competitive.

Hence--QE2.

Here's the deal: If US markets no longer provide sufficient demand for foreign exports, then there will be less incentive to trade in dollars.

Thus, QE poses a real threat to the dollar's position as the world's reserve currency.

In the much-smaller Savings and Loan investigation, more than 1,000 people were charged and convicted.

As Volcker points out, the system is broken and the old rules no longer apply.

As Volcker opines, "We’re faced with broken financial markets, underperformance of our economy and a fractious political climate" because we no longer have "a successful governing model" that the rest of the world admires.

Absent radical restructuring and a new regulatory regime, the dollar will be unable to maintain its "exceptional role" as the world's reserve currency.

It's only a matter of time.

Transparency international has just produced a "corruption perception index" (CPI). It defines corruption as "the abuse of entrusted power for private gain.... it encompasses corrupt practices in both public and private sectors........Broadly speaking, the surveys and assessments used to compile the index include questions relating to bribery of public officials, kickbacks in public procurements, embezzlements of public funds, and questions that probe the strength and effectiveness of public sector anti corruption efforts".

Many MPs in Britain have been publically shamed and some may go to prison, rightly, for fraud. But Tony Blair continues to prosper massively, treated with respect, by corporate media and powerful corporations. Whose crime was the greatest? Would he have continued to prosper, after leaving politics, if he had not supported a war against Iraq?

Federal Judge Henry E. Hudson ruled Monday in favor of Virginia's claim that the requirement for people to purchase health care exceeds the power of Congress under the Constitution's Commerce Clause or under the General Welfare Clause.

Judge Hudson correctly asserts that by forcing individuals to buy health insurance, the Congress has entered new territory. The Commerce Clause of the U.S. Constitution has been used as a tool, almost from the beginning of the United States, to expand the role of government in people's lives, particularly in the economy. With ObamaCare, Congress took the next logical step and said that government may not merely regulate or subsidize economic activity, but actually force individuals to engage in it.

But remember: Getting rid of ObamaCare will merely revert to the over-regulated and already socialized medical care system as we've known it. It gave Hitler unobstructed and unprecedented power to impose his vision of Germany on the country.

What we have not witnessed ever since Barack Obama took office in 2009 is anything so arrogant and bold as the kind of “democratic” coup d'état staged by Hitler.

The move to the Oval Office was loudly orchestrated, just as Hitler’s move to the Chancellorship was loudly orchestrated.

Instead, Obama has been writing his own Enabling Act piecemeal, in installments, as patiently as completing a jigsaw puzzle.

This puzzle was begun by the likes of Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson long, long ago.

It was Hitler urging the Reichstag to pass the Enabling Act.

But one can easily imagine those words being spoken by Obama.

He probably has.

I don’t pretend to remember every toxic and rancid drop of dissimulating verbal swill that has been uttered by the man.

Their willingness to “negotiate,” for example, an extension of the Bush tax cuts instills no confidence in me, nor should it in anyone else.

As deadly as Obama’s emerging Enabling Act might be, is the anti-principle, anti-morality, anti-philosophy of appeasing pragmatism, of cutting a deal to stave off disaster or to retain power.

It sanctions and enables the evil that men can do.

In a recent defense of what he calls "fair trade," Barack Obama stated that one major purpose of trade agreements is to ensure that American products are made at home -- not bought from other countries.
No such thing is true.
